Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Reaches Major Construction Milestones
The Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project has crossed major construction milestones across the 508 kilometer corridor as shared by railway authorities. Passengers and rail enthusiasts can look forward to India's first high speed rail network as work advances rapidly towards the upcoming launch dates. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw have highlighted this remarkable progress in India's modern transportation journey.
The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited has confirmed the successful completion of 359 kilometers of viaduct and 453 kilometers of pier work along the entire corridor. Technical updates as of August 22, 2026 show that 215 kilometers of Reinforced Concrete track beds and 91 kilometers of track slab installation utilizing Cement Asphalt Mortar injection are already finished. Additionally, over 9,000 Overhead Equipment masts and 297 kilometers of noise barriers have been erected. Civil work also includes 17 river bridges, 15 steel bridges, and four mountain tunnels alongside a 5-kilometer tunnel section in Maharashtra excavated using the New Austrian Tunneling Method.
Tunneling and Station Progress
Construction is advancing rapidly in Maharashtra on a 21-kilometer tunnel which includes India's first undersea rail tunnel beneath Thane Creek, where a 4.8-kilometer stretch between Ghansoli and Shilphata is now complete. Structural work has concluded at the Ahmedabad and Bharuch stations while development continues steadily at Sabarmati and Vadodara. Teams have also installed 13 heavy portal beams over busy railway lines in Ahmedabad, featuring a massive 1,640-metric-ton beam at Sabarmati. Furthermore, three rolling stock depots are currently under construction in Sabarmati, Surat, and Thane.
Launch Timelines and Future Operations
Travelers will soon experience high-speed connectivity as the project is slated for an initial service launch between Surat and Vapi covering approximately 100 kilometers in 2027. Following this initial rollout, the full 508-kilometer corridor is targeted for completion by December 2029, promising a revolution in passenger comfort, safety, and travel speed between Maharashtra and Gujarat.
