Palamu Tiger Reserve Railway Relocation Plan

In a major move to prioritize wildlife conservation, the Palamu Tiger Reserve railway relocation project is officially moving forward. Indian Railways is set to divert an 11-kilometer stretch of track that currently traverses the sensitive core area of the reserve to ensure the safety of local fauna.
Protecting Wildlife Through Route Diversion
The primary objective of this initiative is to minimize human and mechanical interference in the core habitat. To achieve this, the railway route will be extended to approximately 14 kilometers, rerouting the line along the periphery of the reserve. This diversion will involve an additional 3 kilometers of track, moving the line from Chhipadohar through Ked village before reaching Hehegara.
Relocating Stations and Building New Infrastructure
The realignment involves a significant overhaul of the existing rail infrastructure in the Latehar district. To support the new alignment, the project includes:
- Relocation of two existing stations: The stations at Chhipadohar and Hehegara will be moved to new locations.
- Construction of three new stations: Three entirely new railway stations will be built to serve the adjusted route and local commuters.
Why the Shift is Necessary
The project follows strict environmental mandates and regulatory oversight. In 2023, the National Wildlife Board rejected a proposal that sought to lay a third railway line through the core area, instead mandating the diversion of the two existing tracks. This decision was reinforced by concerns from the National Tiger Conservation Authority and protests from the forest department regarding the impact on the ecosystem.
The Jharkhand government proposed this shift to the railways to ensure all operations comply with national conservation standards.
Project Progress and Next Steps
The transition is being closely monitored by the State Wildlife Board, chaired by the Chief Minister, to ensure environmental compliance. Following a successful joint survey conducted by Palamu Tiger Reserve officials and railway authorities, the land acquisition process is currently underway to facilitate the new track and station construction.
